چکیده

Nicotine has been shown to cause appetite suppressing effects in humans. Studies have shown that nicotine has a similar effect on C. elegans as it does to mammals thanks to a common receptor to nicotine. C. elegans are a great model organism of study, demonstrated by their small genome size, simple reproduction, and ease of maintenance. They are multicellular, eukaryotic nematodes that share many genetic similarities to humans. This relation has been used to study the effects nicotine has on C. elegans chemotaxis to E. coli. The average attraction of C. elegans free of nicotine was compared to C. elegans treated with nicotine. The hypothesis being investigated is that nicotine will suppress chemotaxis of C. elegans towards its food source of E. coli OP50. The results supported the proposed hypothesis and it was found that the nicotine had a significant effect on the C. elegans chemotaxis to E. coli. There was a noticeable decrease of response in the C. elegans towards the E. coli after treatment with nicotine compared to the normal nicotine free worms.

The effects of morphine and nicotine co-administration on body weight, food intake and appetite-regulating peptides in rats

Previous studies in humans and animals have reported that nicotine administration decreases body weightand caloric intake. Opiate and cigarette have been used concomitantly as drug abuse. The aim of the present study was, therefore, to analyze the effect of chronic co-administration of nicotine and morphine on food intake, body weight and on some feeding-associated peptides. All experiments wer...

Determination of the effects of food preservatives benzoic acid and sodium nitrate on lifespan, fertility and physical growth in Caenorhabditis elegans

Presently, the use of protective food additives such as benzoic acid and sodium nitrate is quite common. However, it was found that these additives, which initially appeared to be harmless, led to the emergence of a number of health problems. Cancer and diseases and deaths with no apparent causes are among the leading concerns. Therefore, the studies which can reveal the genotoxic potential of ...

Short-term nicotine exposure induces long-lasting modulation of gustatory plasticity in Caenorhabditis elegans

Nicotine administration induces many effects on animal behavior. In wild-type Caenorhabditis elegans, gustatory plasticity results in reduced chemotaxis toward NaCl of otherwise attractive concentrations after pre-exposure to 100 mM NaCl in the absence of food. However, acute nicotine administration during a 15 min pre-exposure period inhibits gustatory plasticity, whereas chronic nicotine admi...

Behavior of Caenorhabditis elegans in a nicotine gradient modulated by food.

Nicotine decreases food intake, and smokers often report that they smoke to control their weight. To see whether similar phenomena could be observed in the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans, we challenged drug-naïve nematodes with a chronic low (0.01 mM) and high (1 mM) nicotine concentration for 55 h (from hatching to adulthood). After that, we recorded changes in their behavior in a nicot...

Modulatory effect of ionizing radiation on food-NaCl associative learning: the role of gamma subunit of G protein in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Ionizing radiation (IR) is known to impair learning by suppressing adult neurogenesis in the hippocampus. However, in a mature nervous system, IR-induced functional alterations that are independent of neurogenesis remain largely unknown. In the present study, we analyzed the effects of IR on a food-NaCl associative learning paradigm of adult Caenorhabditis elegans that does not undergo neurogen...
